Explosion at French Nuclear Power Plant, Leak Risk

There is a risk of a radioactive leak after a blast at the southern French nuclear plant of Marcoule, media reports say.

One person was killed and three were injured in the explosion, following a fire in a storage site for radioactive waste, Le Figaro newspaper said.

It is a major site involved with the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.

It produces MOX fuel, which recycles plutonium from nuclear weapons, but does not include any reactors.

A spokesman for France's atomic energy commission said there had so far been no leak but a security perimeter had been set up because of the risk.

The plant is located in the Gard department in Languedoc-Roussillon region, near France's Mediterranean coast.

Not a good year for nucular power...|||Right, and they want to build another one next to the two planned coal power plants 15km away from where I live...|||MOX fuel? I thought he ran on crystals.|||Blasted Asura! I knew those things were a security risk!|||MSN mentioned that it was in a furnace for radioactive waste and that the explosion was entirely contained in said furnace.

They don't know why it exploded yet, but France has been stress-testing their nuclear plants since Japan's earthquake, something tells me this one didn't pass the test.|||Quote:

made me lol, sorry (because it sounded funny)

I hope that failing a stress test doesn't make a nuclear power plant blow up. If anything, I expect that they monitor much more closely during these tests, and can detect any flaw before it becomes a problem.

I'm more likely to believe that it was a random accident or a failure during normal operation than during a test.|||Although if I understand it correctly, this was not actually a nuclear power plant. It was a facility to decommision stuff like a-bombs etc.|||Quote:

Marcoule is one of France's oldest nuclear facilities but has no reactors on site

The EDF spokesman said blast happened in a furnace used to burn waste, including fuels, tools and clothing which had been used in nuclear energy production but had only very low levels of radiation.

In other words, this did not happen at a nuclear power plant, and there is no real risk of a leak. Good title there.

I wonder if you realize the risk of radiation exposure you have from living near coal power plants? Hint: it's much bigger then that from a nuclear power plant. Which still isn't very big.|||Quote:

There was no risk of a radioactive leak after the blast, caused by a fire near a furnace in the Centraco radioactive waste storage site, said officials.

Thread topic had me worried there for a second. In nuclear fallout terms, france is next door for me :/|||Quote:

Original article and info I found are in the OP. So yeah, it all got resolved without major damage (except someone died). Still not a good point for nuclear power in the public opinion.
