Book thread!

Since the hot topic has been bots and the economy I would suggest;

"Synthetic Worlds" by Edward Castronova.

As a H.P. Lovecraft fan I always say;

"The dream quest of unknown Kadath"

and the short stories.

"The Call of Cthulhu", and

"At the mountains of madness"

I think they introduce his mythos the best.

Every Dead Thing, by John Connolly. It's a murder mystery thriller. It'll keep you turning the pages. The first chapter is quite gory, but if you can stomach that part, the rest will be well worth it...

Gravity, by Tess Gerritsen. It's a sci-fi thriller. It's the story of a shuttle crew who ends up hostage of a parasite in space, and cannot return home, for fear of contaminating the earth's population. Very gripping. Got some gory parts, but again, it will keep you wanting to flip those pages...|||I am of the opinion that everybody should read Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass at least once in their adult life. There's a *lot* of content in those books that simply isn't for kids, and I have a great appreciation for Dodgson's work.

I also think that everybody should read Jack L. Whyte's "A Dream of Eagles" series. Good set of books, and puts a new spin on an old favourite legend.

Umm... Tad Williams' "Otherworld" series, too. Also lots of fun.|||Off the top of my head...

Falling Sideways by Tom Colt.

If you like frogs, particulary ones that live in space, and travel using bags sugar, then this is for you. A generally "WTF" kind of read, but really hilarious.|||the whole "Dune" series by Frank Herbert....i found them quite interesting....allthough the end was kinda CHEESY.....the reason to read em?...well if your into sci-fi, politics, religion etc then these serie is great....i enjoyed it.....if you want more entertainment for reading then i would advise reading "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams or any book by Terry Pratchet.....|||The Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card.

The guy is fairly religious, but you can easily move past that and consider these books as they really are: commentaries on humanity. They're so completely full of interesting comments on humanity and society that I learn something new each time I read them. Some people think his books are a bit slow/preachy, but that's up to whether you want a book that makes you think or not. I'm personally atheist, and I have no problem with the religious parts of the book.|||The "Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R.R. Martin. It's a story of deep political intrigues set in a fantasy world, with really engaging characters. It's utterly fascinating how there's no clear hero or villain in his books; everybody is simply 'human', no more and no less.

A word of warning: The stories have a tendency to be depressing. If you're a fan of people overcoming odds and living happily ever after, DON'T read this series.

EDIT: I also echo maina's recommendation of books revolving around the Cthulhu Mythos. Ia!
