Jane Russell, RIP

Self-described "teetotal, mean-spirited, right-wing, narrow-minded, conservative Christian bigot, but not a racist,", dead at 89.

|||Have nothing to say about Jane Russell (except R.I.P.) as I don't know the first thing about her, but I did inherit a "superbly remastered" VHS copy of The Outlaw and had a look at it a couple of years ago. Rubbish, really. The cover on mine isn't quite as raunchy as the pics shown above and since the only interesting thing about the movie is the controversy associated with the cover imagery, I feel a bit ripped off.

I get an ad for George Michael's "Faith" at the top of the New York Times page you've linked to, also "remastered" and "reissued on multiple exciting formats." Now there's someone who actually got himself involved in some interesting scandals.

Can't see this thread being a big hit with the kids, j.|||Quote:

Yeah, yesteryear's spin is generally viewed with a jaundiced eye, and old ladies are rarely seen as beautiful in our shallow modern culture. Jane was Marilyn Monroe's brunette counterpart back in the day...

That doesn't make the history of spin any less relevant (I hate the non-term, "impact-ful"). Like this morning, I was cleaning out a couple of Glenn Beck episodes that had been recorded on my DVR. Did you know that the concept of "a healthy breakfast" starring bacon was a marketing ploy, devised on behalf of Beech-Nut (now Oscar Meyer) by the 'father of propaganda'?|||More of a fan of Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Mae West myself; you kids with your girls in colour and non-run stockings!

As for Edward Berneys - wasn't he Jewish?

Not saying he wouldn't let a little bacon pass him by for some money but judging from his Uncle's childhood - it sounds like it was a full house of cards back then stepping out of line from 'the true faith'. Mind you with what he did to the Guatemalan people I don't think I can stomach feeling any sympathy for him.

Anyway - Jane Russell is dead and Merf tapes Glen Beck - what a thread so far!

It's Bernays, and while he was indeed Semitic I tend to doubt any religious affiliation. Aside from Progressive theology, of course.

I've got to admit, the episode was all but fascinating. Beck has alluded to what a manipulative dude Bernays was numerous times before, usually talking about Obama's appointment of Cass Sunstein. But Beck also discussed this incident where Bernays choreographed a bunch of women in a parade pulling a cigarette out of their garter and lighting up, couching it in terms of "freedom". This was in an effort to 'break' a law that NYC had passed against women being able to smoke.

Imagine, a law in NYC that people couldn't smoke! Can you conceive of such idiocy?

Like I said, I rarely watch Beck nowadays, but every once in a while he's got some really interesting material.|||I was just having a jibe at you with the Beck thing - as long as you keep it balanced with some Daily Show you'll be alright.

Thanks for the correction on spelling; it's been a while since I've had to type it. I've been a big fan of control and conditioning and think he really did start the ball rolling on modern 'consumerism'. There were enrolment posters, adverts for pies, Toulouse Lautrec and of course 'yellow journalism' around before he took the stand. Combined with the father of (modern) psychology in his family he did what any observant money maker would and grabbed the bull by the horns. It's the lack of prominent people like that these days which gets my conspiracy bone twitching :) I first found out about him in 2000 or thereabouts on a BBC documentary. It's mind blowing how much was accomplished then and scary how much of it is still in place now. I wonder if it's human nature to evolve this way...

And to conclude - yes fishnet are very, very nice. Especially when held up by suspenders and protected at the base by patent leather high heel shoes.

Or so I recall. On someone else. In a black and white talkie.

I prefer the reputability of The Onion and FARK. Plus I can see the vids.

See, that's why you need to watch Beck every so often, and you'll learn enough about Emperor Palpatine to scare the crap out of you.

I bet it was Russell...

Another article, from the Daily Mail this time: Bob Hope once introduced her as ‘the two and only Miss Russell’.
