Official movie thread.

[:1]I'm starting this thread because we have a number of variations of movie threads, but none specifically dealing with all movies in general. Wait...specifically in general? Did I say that?

Anyway. There is a similar thread in the D2 forums, and I've found it to be quite useful a few times when I was looking for a few DVD's to rent for the weekend. Basically, put down the title of the movie first, type of movie (horror, comedy, adventure, suspense, anime, western, war...NO PORN MOVIES PLEASE) maybe a grade for it from zero to ten--zero meaning 'never soil your electronic equipment with this garbage' and ten meaning 'this movie is the best movie you ever saw, never take it out of your DVD player'--and perhaps a short summary of your impression of it. So, to pick some movie out at random, like this:

Bruce Almighty

Comedy

8.0

Bruce, played by Jim Carrey, is an aspiring newscaster who constantly complains about his lot in life. He has a bad day or two, starts raging against God and his bad luck, and God (Morgan Freeman) responds by giving Bruce divine powers and challenging him to see how 'easy' it is to be God.

The movie is funny and as always, Morgan Freeman is perfect in his role. Jennifer Anniston, who I usually don't care for very much, is actually quite adorable as Bruce's girlfriend. Jim Carrey is his usual obnoxious but humorous self (I can only take so much of this actor at one sitting, frankly) and the storyline is clear. If you're looking for lighthearted comedy with some decent effects, pick this one up; it's better than most.

A couple of things. This thread is intended to help folks pick out movies they've never seen or maybe even heard of, so although I don't mind some discussion about them I'd prefer it not go on for pages about differing opinions. Most especially this applies to anime, which has its own thread that can be found here. Sure, post about anime movies but if you wish to discuss them at length, go to that thread.

Keep it clean. No flaming about people's opinions, please. I look forward to finding out about some good movies from people I've come to know here in the OTF. The movies can be from any genre (again, except pornography) or any era--they don't need to be recent.

Edit:

Here's a basic guide to use for scoring a film, submitted by Gorani:

Quote:

10/10 Breathtaking & surprising new or very well made

9-8/10 Very good and worth watching

7-6/10 Still good to watch, might not be for everybody. Renting or Watching on TV usually no waste of money or time

5-4/10 I usually regret watching this, because it has major flaws

3-2/10 Only watch intoxicated

1/10 cut your wrists before watching, so you don't have to see it to the end|||Waking Ned Devine (1998)

Comedy

7.5

(I'm just going to copy and paste the plot oultine from IMDB.com. I'm lazy and can't really put it any better than this.)

When word reaches two elderly best friends that someone in their tiny Irish village has won the national lottery, they go to great lengths to find the winner so they can share the wealth. When they discover the "lucky" winner, Ned Devine, they find he has died of shock upon discovering his win. Not wanting the money to go to waste, the village enters a pact to pretend Ned is still alive by having another man pose as him, and then to divide the money between them.

/plagarism

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie; so much that I went to great lengths to find it on DVD. The situations the villagers get themselves into are great.

Watch it, or else!|||The Mask

10

comedy

The film stars Jim Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss (the mask) and Cameron Diaz as Tina Carlyle. (Its the first film she was ever in btw!)

Now to quote from wiki..

The film revolves around two men who live in Edge City. The first is a bank clerk named Stanley Ipkiss, a shy, luckless romantic who is regularly bullied by nearly everyone around him: his boss, landlady and even car mechanics; his only friends are his cocky but good-natured co-worker Charlie and his small but heroic dog Milo. The two men's paths cross when Tyrell sends his singer girlfriend Tina Carlyle into Stanley's bank with a hidden camera, as part of Tyrell's plan to rob the establishment.

..thats enough of wiki..

Bassically things suck for Stanley, and he finds a loki mask, upon putting it on he becomes a .. lack for a better description.. a real life looney toon. He is invincible and aquires a terrible taste for mischief. he can pull obnject out of thin air.. why with his powers he could do anything.. he could become.. A SUPER HERO!!!... but first.... hes gotta have a little fun.

Hilarious one liners and gags, great story, amazing graphics for its time, and so many spontaneous moments that will keep you guys laughing till the end ^^;

(for those who have seen the movie..)

Spoiler

From wiki:

Jim Carrey adlibbed at least two moments during the production: when he pulls a condom out of his pocket instead of a balloon, and when he kisses an old woman after fleeing from the scene of his performance of Cuban Pete.|||Time Bandits(1981)

Comedy

7.5/10

A young boy falls into the company of a group of dwarves who have 'borrowed' a map of the the Universe's time holes. Together they adventure through various ages in time, varying from Napoleonic time to the Middle Ages, to the 1900s. All while being watched by The Supreme Being and Evil. Much hilarity ensues along the way.

I honestly love this movie. And what makes it truly great is Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam(Monty Python, anyone?) wrote it, and several of the Monty Python guys make appearances in this movie. All around a good, fun movie.

Spoiler

Although the ending is a bit on the bizarre side.... |||Quote:

Well, if you don't count the soft-core bondage video she was in!

(That's just a link from IMDB describing the video. No pictures or anything.)

That's pretty funny actually.|||The Big Lebowski

8.5

I hate doing synopses, but this is basically about an addled slacker who gets caught up in larger affairs. I, too, think it makes the most sense to post the IMDB database entry.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118715/

Normally I don't get <really> into this sort of comedy, but the Coen bros. hit this one out of the park. Great characters, and actual plot (crime drama), fine acting, etc. etc. A sleeper in some ways; I bet the studio didn't hype it like they often do.|||Monty Python and the Holy Grail

9.0/10

Since people tend to leave the link to imdb, here it is:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/

The movie is -in 1 word- hilarious. If you haven't seen it yet, do it. NOW!

The story is basically a bunsh of low-budget knights going on a quest to find the Holy Grail, encountering many perils like French soldiers, the Black Knight and other bizarre situations. Why are you still reading this instead of watching it?|||Kill Bill: Volume One

Revenge/Action

8.5/10

IMDB Link (everyone else is doing it ): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266697/

I must admit, I don't enjoy gory movies that much, but since this movie is highly recommended I thought I would venture out of my comfort zone and watch it. Well it wasn't as bad as I thought, not any real gore - just blood. Lots of blood, but it's all very fake looking - almost humorous.

The story is intriguing and I am looking very much to getting Volume Two, to watch the rest. I highly recommend this movie, great soundtrack and awesome action. Though wouldn't recommend for kids or people who don't like blood.

EDIT: Opps, added genre.|||Blood Diamond

Adventure/Drama/Thriller

9.5/10

this film is proberlly one of the best films ive seen i liked it all the way through watching it and enjoyed every moment. heres the story

In 1999, in Sierra Leone, the fisherman Solomon Vandy dreams on the day that his young son Dia Vandy will become a doctor. His dreams are shattered when the rebels invade his village and kidnap him to work in the diamond mines. Solomon finds a huge pink diamond and while hiding it, the commandant of the rebels sees, but the rebels are attacked and Salomon is arrested by the government army. While in jail, the wounded commandant tell the prisoners that Salomon found the stone, and the mercenary smuggler Danny Archer from Zimbabwe releases Salomon and proposes to exchange the diamond by his missing family. Using the idealistic American journalist Maddy Bowen, Danny locates the wife and daughters of Salomon in a refugee camp, but is informed that his son has been recruited by the rebels. Salomon and Danny consolidate a partnership, with Salomon looking for and finding his son, and Danny looking for the diamond and finding redemption.

i havent really liked films with Leonardo DiCaprio dunno why just havent but this film was differnt and ive gotta say he was awesome in it|||Seen recently.

I'm Not There

Drama/Bio-pic

3/10

Unutterably dull dramatisation of Bob Dylan's life and changing personality. Not bad as such (Blanchett's performance is good but, like the rest of the film, doesn't really say very much) but just overlong and boring. It desparately wants its different storylines to represent the intertwining facets of Dylan's persona but it just comes across as jumbled and disordered.

Julianne Moore's turn as an ex-folk singer reminiscing about concerts past reminded me of nothing so much as an out-take from A Mighty Wind.

One of the very few films I've seen in my life where I would've left before the end if it hadn't meant disturbing other film-goers.

Charlie Wilson's War

Thriller/History/Political Comedy

6.5/10

Semi-dramatised history of the eponymous Texas Congressman and how he brought the US into a covert war against the Soviets in Afghanistan. Intriguing and funny in places but could've had more made of it, I think. It's also one of those films that, for me, is let down by the preponderance of A-list actors in it.

Whilst Phillip Seymour Hoffman is very good as the cynical CIA agent and Tom Hanks is good-in-a-Tom-Hanks-way as Charlie Wilson himself, Julia Roberts looks like she's playing some kind of drag queen as an aging socialite with a burning desire to crush Communism. She acts well enough but doesn't fit the part, IMHO. I couldn't help but think "Why is Julia Roberts wearing that awful wig?" every time she appeared on screen.

The story's predicatble enough if you know the history but it's well played with contemporary footage of the Soviet/Afghan war mixed in. More could've been made of Wilson's disgust at the "we kicked the Russkies asses and we don't much care about the Afghans now" attitude of the bean-counters (which, arguably, set up many of the issues we're facing today) but then we'd be led into a much longer political history rather than a personal biography.
